I never saw one of those or even thought Yamaha made a 500 thought only 490s.

Ya gotta excuse me! I run across that picture of a water cooled 500 Yamaha with an aluminum frame from 1987 and couldn't control myself. Who's got it? I want it!

I have many pics in the archives of that bike.
It was pretty much a 'factory works' bike.
Word is a few were even destroyed by the factory.
Scott is right only a handful were made and at a time when smokers were starting to get long in the tooth per say.
I guess Yamaha just wanted to say "Hey we can build an open watercooled bike if we want to".
Sucks for us cause watercooling would have fixed almost all the 490's problems.

When they first made them they were power valved air cooler, they had a real odd looking pancake pipe.
Then the 87/88 were l/c and had a bit better pipe.

Only 8 were ever made.

I wish the "production rule" would go away......

From what I've read is the frames were all wrong and the power was there... but in all the wrong places, I geuss like pualie said yami just wanted to prove a point. But if only they would have spent alittle more r&d into them, they could have been the most advanced bikes ever made at the time, yamaha could have sold thousands.. I really wish they would have.

The motor on the new 450 is crazy looking.

Yeah its sweet, but the way I see it is its just more shit to break. And I'm not sold on the exhaust....
