Got the bike in a trade and don't know much about fixing them. Won't start and backfires sometimes when you do. I was told, that the timing jumped... Does that sound about right? Anybody got any suggestions or recommendations on where to start with the bike.....

sounds like an intermiten spark issue to me. could be the flywheel key as mentioned, but could also be a carb issue as well.
like stated before, clean carb back to new condition, make sure all jets are free and clear and the float is adjusted properly along with the air fuel screw. also make sure that the fuel line and petcock is clear as well. check your reeds while the carb is off to make sure there is no gap in them.

how is the compression? an engine that is low on compression will have trouble drawing fuel from the carb.

fix

:Monster:I would first start with a good hot plug. Then make sure nothing is blocking air,I would also say that the timing prolly didn't jump, you may want to check stator cause bike has sat in a shed or somewhere moist prolly, then line up marks on flywheel, then make sure flywheel is good and tight!good to go!!
