Does any body have any 2 stroke Detroit Diesels on this site? I'm a diesel tech and like seing these old motors. They make a sound like no other.

Nope wish they still made it I would have bought one over my F350 Diesel anyday.
never heard of them but sounds cool and sounds like they would be reliable.
Anyone here ever heard the odd yet interesting sound of the 2 cylinder, 2-stroke, 1967 Toyota? Beautiful little 2-seater car made from very thin ply components of aluminum veneer over wood. Very cool. I've only seen one, and that was at a show in Texas. Top speed was around 45mph and mileage was around 60mpg if I remember correctly.

those came in city buses and cement trucks jason......
huh I thought they had it in a truck, they had the motor on Trucks one morning but the motor was out of the chassis so I guess I just figured it was to a Truck, All set with the bus my F-350 is pretty damn close to the size of a bus. A cement truck would be nice. Make it easy to get rid of the bodies
Many of these motors powered old Semi Tractors, they needed a supercharger to run. They had 4 exhaust valves and an intake port on the side of the cylinder where air was blown in by the supercharger. A lot of them also had turbos, some bad ass diesels.
I used to build them in the marines, 8V92 silver series, 6V53T, 671,871 you name it, I had to build a silver series 8V92 to put out 1000hp for an LVS.
They sound awsome when you nail the throttle and the jake brakes were sweet! I mostly delt with the 6V53T in light armored vehicles. Every engine I built had over 300hp which is pretty impressive seeing as how most civilian models were under 180hp.
They were shitty engines for semi trucks, no torque at all! If you hit a hill they would tuck tail and hide.

Its been years sence I've seen one.
My uncles have a few of em out in potatoe trucks out on the farm....Nothin like hearin a jimmy first thin in the moring....Sound sweet down the highway too with the turbo/super
a few years back when i was in diesel school, we were building one from about 4 different engines they had all apart. they were marine engines. to bad the year ended before we could finish it up and hear it run.
We got one at the farm in a Michigan front end loader. Its down right now, the supercharger drive gear shattered, my brohter was workin on it but never finished. Used to love hearin that thing run everyday when they used it to feed
there was a guy one time out at portland international raceway that had one of thoughs motors settup on a oversized dragster frame. the motor was twin turboed and supercharged. man did it smoke.
I always hated the 1st time I fired one up! Slightest mistakes and she runs away. Remember if you are about to fire one up for the 1st time make sure the buffer is loose. 8V92's are hard to shut down once they run off.
How does a jake brake work on a 2-stroke?
well kane a detroit diesel is in a way a combination of a 2 and 4 stroke
it has valves for the exhaust but the air is delivered through a port on the side of the cylinder
so when the piston comes down it uncovers a port on the sid eof the sleeve and air is forced into the hole

and a standard exhaust valve lets the spent gas out
I got a dvd from WyoTech and they had a 2 stroke detriot diesel. Didn't spend much time explaining it though...but it looked like a sweet motor
The jake works like any other jake, It opens the exhaust valve slightly on the compression stroke to lower compression enough that the cylinder won't fire but it still has enough compression to allow engine brakeing. The cool thing is they has a single jake per cylinder unlike most diesels that share a housing for several cylinders. I don't remember how they build oil pressure to the jake though.
Well, having a tad bit of experience, read tad here, on diesel engines I knew what a jake was but couldn't figure the valve thing on a 2-stroke. I remember in the early 80's reading some obscure article in JL Enterprises tech book about a powervalve coming out soon that would increase HP output. I remember thinking that it would be cool as hell and really help on porting designs. Unfortunately, the powervalve had very little in common with an exhaust valve in a 4-stroke. Cool to hear there actually is a 2-stroke with a mechanical valve design. Anyone know a site where I can see some schematics or decent pics of one?

I'm having a problem with My 1978 Detroit 671 inline diesel. It has been blowing white smoke and I discovered the crossover tubes were loose letting diesel down into the oil in the crankcase so I got those all tight and changed the oil and put it all back together but now there is oil blowing out a little 3/8 diameter tube coming off the passenger side of the block just above the drain pan towards the clutch end of the engine? Like if I rev the engine to see if it's going to smoke like it was before and the RPMs are up to 2200 I look under the truck and a steady little stream of oil is shooting out of this little metal 3/8 tube that points down like it's a little baby breather tube? If anything I have just enough oil in it right now it's all the way at the bottom of the stick until I can make sure diesel isn't still getting into the oil. It looks like the engine has a new head everything is immaculate I haven't run the rack yet but I did check a few things on it and everything seemed to be working very well. But I still have some white smoke at idle and a lot of white smoke at 2,200 RPM. Does anybody have an explanation of this little baby breather tube and the white smoke? Is it possible for injectors to overfeed even if the little racks are all working freely and everything seems good in the injectors are basically new?

This is a picture of the little draft tube
